Instagram is no longer to be out of our lives. Or you hear about it, or you have the app on your smartphone. No other social media platform has seen such a rapid increase in users.

The following statistics show that as an organizer you should not only keep an eye on this channel, but also really understand and use it:

2.5 million Instagram users in India

1.6 million daily Instagram users in India

800 million Instagram users per month worldwide

250 million daily Instagram users of Instagram Stories

The Instagram algorithm

These figures again make clear that Instagram should be taken seriously as a marketing channel for events. But with the algorithm that Instagram uses to show posts, it's hard to get through to the masses with your content. Your news feed is personalized based on your interaction with the accounts you view. The purpose of this is that content from friends and family is shown earlier than content from companies. Here are four tricks to help you crack the Instagram algorithm and show your content to the right audience:

1. Have your hashtags fit the image

That sounds banal, but only a handful of users do it. If there is no food in your image, do not use the hashtag 'food court'. Look at the details in your image and try to find meaningful subjects that are really in the picture.

2. Never use the same hashtag in a row

Do not use the same hashtag twice in a row, even if it fits so well with your messages. Think about your hashtags and try to include the same theme in a different hashtag. You could even create a hashtag for your brand, product or campaign. You can stimulate engagement by asking others to post photos and videos with your own hashtag. You can do this for example in the form of a photo contest. Ask people to share photos and videos to win something. You can also post a photo of a contest yourself and ask the audience to share the photo with the hashtag. Consider pricing a product from your shop, a make-over or a course. It is useful to examine in advance whether the hashtag you have invented is not already in use.

3. Do not always use the same number of hashtags

The rule that you should try to use the 30 hashtags that are available per image is outdated. If you can only "invent" five hashtags for an image, because you A) have fired all of your gunpowder from the previous image or B) just do not think of anything else, that's right. For example, the Instagram algorithm can see that you simply do not want to flood the platform with your content or hashtags, but really want to promote relevant content. Consistency is, therefore 'the key'. Besides being consistent it is very important that you focus on something. On your ideal follower, on your story, and on your objective. If you focus on these things you will see that your Instagram story becomes clearer so that it is clear to your ideal follower why they should follow you and do not doubt about it!

4. Use hashtags with less volume

Hashtags like 'foodcourt' are hugely popular, but until you actually reach the people in those well-visited hashtags, you must first have a very high level of interaction for your contributions. Therefore, start small! Look for hashtags with relatively little interaction. Look at the interaction for your contributions and find other contributions with similar interaction ratios and use those hashtags for your messages. In that way, you ensure that people see your hashtags. As the interaction for your contributions increases, you can also make a big difference to your hashtags.
